What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. These are the two joints that connect the jawbone to the skull. Pain and dysfunction of these joints and the muscles that move the jaw, allowing you to chew, etc. (muscles of mastication) is temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
For patients with TMJ disorder syndromes, Botox can help. It does this by helping relax tense jaw muscles, resulting in pain relief. Studies have found that symptoms have improved in 90% of those choosing this treatment. It is also typically recommended as a concurrent treatment with other TMJ therapies like a night guard.
Botox is very effective for relaxing your jaw muscles to prevent jaw clenching. As a result, this may relieve the frequency and severity of migraines and headaches.
The pattern to treat TMJ is usually triangular insertion points. This may require anywhere from 10-20 units per point of each triangle to each side of TMJ.
